Tiger Cub
Firefighters |
|
 |
November 18th, 2008
- Earlier last week the Silver Creek Fire Department was visited
by an up and coming group of young men, the Tiger Cubs from
Random Lake Cub Scout Pack 3863. Den Leader Russell Allen
brought the group of Scouts to the fire station to learn about
Fire Prevention. Under the guidance of Lieutenant
firefighter Tony Hurley, the Scouts discussed the risks and
hazards found inside and outside of every home. After
turning the "hazard" house into a "safe" house, the Scouts
performed some hands on fire extinguisher training. Each
Scout was successfully able to extinguish a live fire using a
small fire extinguisher. A tour of the fire station ended
the evening where the Scouts learned about various tools,
equipment, and apparatus used by the Silver Creek Fire
Department. Check out the

Fire
Prevention Program |
|
 |
November 7th, 2008
- The first week of October was a busy time for fire
departments. Thankfully, not because of fire calls.
This is the time of year for Fire Prevention and educating the
public about fire safety. One of the programs that Silver
Creek firefighters, along with Adell, Batavia, and Random lake
provided was to educate the children of the Random Lake Grade
School, Our Lady of the Lakes School, and Sherman Center School
about fire safety. At each school a presentation was made
using the Silver Creek Fire Department's Sparky's Hazard House.
The Hazard House is used as a visual aid to demonstrate to
children the hazards in a house and how they can be avoided. It
also shows them how smoke can move through a house and how to
escape during a fire. The Hazard House has been greeted with
great success by the students and faculty for the past two
years. It has proven to be a good means of holding the students
attention and teaching them about fire prevention.
Firefighters also had preschoolers come to the Random Lake Fire
Department for a movie and talk about fire safety along with a
tour of the fire station and fire trucks. The Silver Creek
Fire Department takes great pride in continuing the education of
our young people in the community. |

Mutual Aid
Fire Training |
 |
September 20th, 2008
- Several members of the Silver Creek Fire Department joined
forces with members of the Boltonville, Fillmore, Waubeka, and
Random Lake Fire Departments. Crews were fortunate to make
use of an abandoned home being operated by the Fredonia Fire
Department. Members had the opportunity to perform five
different stations including Command, Vertical Ventilation,
Rapid Intervention Team (firefighter rescue), Search & Rescue,
and Fire Attack. Each evolution lasted 40 minutes with a
20 minute break between. Safety, communications, and
accountability were stressed throughout the day. Emergency
medical personnel from the Waubeka Ambulance established a well
staffed and organized rehab area that provided cool beverages
and snacks during the training as well as a delicious lunch for
all training attendees. This was a great training
opportunity that many members left with positive experience.
Event organizers have already begun discussing topics for a 2009
mutual aid training day. |

Mutual Aid
Extrication Training |
 |
August 26th, 2008
- On Monday August 25th, the Silver Creek Fire Department
continued its long standing relationship with the Random Lake
Fire Department by participating in a mutual aid automobile
extrication drill. Led by RLFD Training Officer Jim Wilke and
along with the expertise of many knowledgeable Random Lake
firefighters, SCFD members became familiar with the
equipment and techniques utilized in performing vehicle rescues
including the "Jaws of Life". A live car fire was also
performed, allowing practice of techniques used in extinguishing
car fires. This was an outstanding training opportunity that
many members were excited to be participating in. Stay tuned for
details from Septembers training that will feature 6 fire
departments working together in a training house operated by the
Fredonia Fire Department. |

Fireworks &
Common Sense |
 |
June 22nd, 2008
- Every year Americans are injured in
accidents related to fireworks. The Silver Creek
Fire Department would like area residents to
experience an
"injury-free Fourth".
The best way to avoid injuries involving fireworks, is to
not use them in the first place. Rather, attend public displays
conducted by fireworks professionals.
If you decide to use fireworks, please follow these safety tips:
۰ Always read and understand the label
directions
۰
Always have a fire extinguisher or water hose nearby
۰
Never give fireworks to small children
۰
Never throw or direct fireworks at another person
۰
Never carry fireworks in your pockets
۰
Never try to re-ignite malfunctioning fireworks
Never take fireworks or pets to public firework displays.
Fireworks are dangerous around large crowds and pets. Dogs
especially have sensitive hearing and do not tolerate fireworks
very well.
USE CAUTION and COMMON SENSE to have a safe and
enjoyable 4th of July holiday. The
Silver Creek Fire Department wishes you a safe and happy 4th of
July!! |

Flooding - Health &
Safety Tips |

 |
June 13th, 2008
- Due to the recent severe weather and large amounts of
rainfall, many residents are experiencing flooding in their homes.
If you or someone you know is experiencing flooding now or in
the future, try to remember the following tips to help protect
you and your loved ones from health and safety hazards.
|
Before Evacuating Your Home
۰
Turn off gas stoves.
۰ Take any medications with you.
۰ Alert relatives where you
are going. |
Mold
Many people are allergic to
mold. Young children, the elderly, and people with
asthma and/or other
medical issues can be affected by mold. The following
recommendations should be considered:
۰
Inspect for mold growth
through out the house, including attics, basements and
crawlspaces.
۰
Household furnishings,
carpets, etc. must be cleaned and dried as soon as possible
to avoid mold growth.
۰
Discard furnishings such as
carpet, drapes, stuffed toys, upholstered furniture,
mattresses, wicker furniture, ceiling tiles, and other items
that can’t be dried completely.
۰
Keep records of all of the
items you discard for insurance purposes.
۰
Remove and replace wet
drywall and insulation.
۰
Inspect and clean all
appliances that have been in contact with floodwater.
۰
Have heating and ventilation
professionals check heating and cooling systems for mold
contamination.
|
|
Garbage Precautions
۰
Place household garbage in
waterproof containers.
۰
Store garbage in a rigid
container so not to attract animals and disease-bearing
insects.
۰
Keep records of all items
discarded for insurance purposes. |
|
Electrical Safety
۰
Do not attempt to restore or
work on power sources without first contacting your utility.
۰
Generators
should ONLY be used in well-ventilated areas. |
|
Physical Hazards
۰
Avoid wading in water without
proper foot protection.
۰
Potential
debris may be submerged in the flooded area.
۰
Wear proper protective
equipment when cleaning. |
|
Increased Insect Activity
۰
Use insect repellent when
outside.
۰
Remove stagnant water from
tires, dishes, cans, etc. |

Tornado & Severe Weather
Awareness |
 |
April 5th, 2008
-
Wisconsin Governor
Jim Doyle has
declared April 21st
- 25th as Tornado
and Severe Weather week in Wisconsin.
The campaign is to remind people of the dangers associated with
tornadoes, thunderstorms, flooding and hail and to encourage
citizens to take protective safety measures such as developing a
personal preparedness plan and putting together a disaster
supply kit. A statewide tornado drill will be held on
Thursday, April 24, 2008 beginning with a statewide mock tornado
watch at 1:00 p.m. The mock tornado warnings will be staggered
throughout the state at times designated by the National Weather
Service. Participating
in a tornado drill helps to ensure
that friends and family know what to
do and where to go should a tornado or severe weather event
occur. |
